Tensions have been high in the US ever since the 2016 election. Our country is more divided than ever, yet, at the same time, more motivated than ever. No matter what your specific values are or where you live, being an active voter is incredibly important to our democracy. It may seem hopeless at times, to move systems to change, but your voice does matter! The midterm elections are being held on November 6th and could potentially change the tides of our current establishment. Are you registered to vote? Do you know who’s running in your district? Are you aware of where your nearest polling place is? An act which should be so simple has become complicated today and can seem incredibly overwhelming, however, there’s reason to rejoice. Websites like Vote.org and Vote Save America make it easy for you to complete your civic duty this Fall! Visit these sites and get answers before the elections, so you can wear your “I Voted” sticker with pride.
There’s nothing we hate more than thinking of the piles upon piles of textiles sitting in landfills. To remind you, about 85% of clothing accumulated in the US each year is thrown away. Unfortunately many of these items aren’t necessarily saved when donated to Goodwill or similar large charities. If a friend wouldn’t wear it why would a stranger? This is why we are huge fans of quality items over fast fashion, and mending clothes before throwing them away! In order to give you the best value with you swap, we have a strict screening process when you send your clothing to Swap Society.
We’re pleased to feature Jessica Perkins as part of our series Swappers We Love! Her blog, English Lass in LA, started as a way for Jessica to make sense of her transition to the states and has blossomed into a go-to online space for sustainable fashion, zero waste, and conscious living guidance. Jessica always had a love for fashion and worked her way through the corporate sector of the industry. Through her various jobs in the UK fashion world, Jessica became privy to the horrors of the industry at large. Jessica committed to making a change is and avid supporter of Swap Society! We’re so pleased to share more of her story below.
“You give away more clothes than I own,” said a friend years ago when I showed up to a dance rehearsal with a couple big bags of clothes to share. It wasn’t the first time I found myself purging large amounts of clothing, and it certainly wasn’t the last. Eventually I started thinking about my shopping habits, and I began to realize that I was guilty of mindless consumption, but many years would pass before I would make significant changes. I felt okay with the rapid cycle of mixing up my wardrobe because it was fun, plus I would pass along my discarded clothes to friends, or donate them to charities. Little did I know what actually happens with donated clothing. (Spoiler: Almost all of it ends up in a landfill.)
It’s officially fall! Here in Los Angeles, we don’t have the same clearly defined seasons or wardrobe changes, yet we all still crave one. We’re ready to take any excuse to pull on a new comfy sweater, even if it’s just sitting in that air conditioned coffee shop Downtown. On the site we have “jumpers” for all occasions and all variations of this crisp season. If you’re like us and prepping for fall in a warmer climate then we have some less-heavy pieces to get you into the spirit. On the other hand, if you live in an area with actual seasons and are looking to cozy up as it cools down, we’ve got you covered as well! And, as always, for those adventurous types who want to shake things up, we have fun pieces to really make a statement these next few months. Fall doesn’t just mean pumpkin spice everything, it means looking great and feeling good!
